Working with companies to meet their emerging need - organizational design for flexibility and speed

Learning about organizational change is a journey. You are not the same person you were when you started your journey, nor are you the same person you will be when you complete your current learning objective. However, other than a few people, everyone else has a stereotype of you from when they first met you. If you do not apply what you are learning now, they will continue to see you the same way they always have and, in their eyes, you will not have changed.

What I believe about Organizational Change:

3 Essentials for Successful Org Change

  1. Knowing what to change and what not to change

  2. Differentiate change leadership and change management

Ability to mandate vs. influence change

Lead the vision for change

Manage the change process

  1. Knowing how to involve people

Change enablement

Change Management Academy

The Change Management Academy is loosely associated with several org-change groups with a tilt toward novices. As a novice, you likely have little to no formal training in the theory and practice of organizational change. You hate “being changed” but now find yourself an “inadvertent change manager” – the department manager or project leader – forced to lead change or address resistance to meet your goals. Or you may be in HR and tasked with helping solve “people problems.”

The focus in this group is basic education for those new to organizational change. A safe place to ask any (dumb) questions because you do not know enough to ask the right questions. Mini-lectures will be provided (prioritized by the questions people are asking), along with links to other resources or services that may meet your needs where you currently are in your learning journey.

Overcome the Resistance that is Limiting Your Success

Manage resistance – or it will manage you

Critical Success Factors for Organizational Change:

  1. Seek to understand dominant trends

  2. Unbundle and re-bundle with craftsmanship and care

  3. Establish some context for change

  4. Influence without attempting to control

  5. Determine whether change management or change leadership is needed

  6. Emotion trumps logic

  7. Use vision to establish some certainty

  8. Decrease learning anxiety while increasing survival anxiety

  9. Expect a performance dip

  10. Organizations only change through collective change by individuals

  11. Enable leadership at all levels

  12. Encourage participation

  13. Change agents also need a mentor

Argument for Change

• Change will occur, with or without your input.

• Better to influence what you can than take what others will give you.
